Hazel "Mae" Hartzler

June 22, 1907 — October 29, 2007

Hazel "Mae" Hartzler, 100, of Ligonier, passed away Monday, October 29, 2007, at 7:45PM at Avalon Village Nursing Home in Ligonier, IN. She was born on June 22, 1907, in Noble County, IN, to Melvin & Blanche (Hall) Steele.

She married Roy Hartzler on May 16, 1930. He preceded her in death in 1983.

A lifelong area resident, Mae was a school teacher for over 23 years; teaching at several area schools including the Walnut One Room School, Honeyville Elementary, Perry Centralized, Wawaka and Ligonier. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1925 and went on to earn a teaching degree from Manchester College. She volunteered for a number of years at the Window of Goshen and the Topeka Mennonite Church where she had served as the church board secretary. Mae had also served as the president of the TWM and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include 1 Son: Larry (Linda) Hartzler of Ligonier, 1 Daughter: Royann (Orland) Sprunger of Topeka, 1 Daughter-Law: Laverne (Everett) Moon of Twelve Mile, IN, 9 Grandchildren, 22 Great-Grandchildren, 11 Great-Great Grandchildren, & 1 Sister: Evelyn Campbell of Lagrange. She was preceded in death by: Her Husband: Roy Hartzler, 1 Son: Quentin L. Hartzler, 2 brothers & 1 sister.

Services will be held on Friday November 2, 2007, at 10:00 AM at the Topeka Mennonite Church, 206 East Lake St., Topeka, IN, 46571. Pastor Robert Martz will officiate. Burial will take place in the Eden Cemetery in Topeka, IN. Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8PM on Thursday, November 1, 2007 at the Topeka Mennonite Church.
