Nelson Auer, 88, of Syracuse, passed away on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at 8:40PM at Miller's Merry Manor in Syracuse. He was born on October 29, 1919, near Dewart Lake to John & Etta Mae (Wogoman) Auer.
On December 31, 1940, he married June L. Baker. She survives.
A lifetime area resident, he was the previous owner of Auer's Service Station for 29 years, past co-owner of Maxwelton Golf Club, where he operated the restaurant for 2 years in the early 1970s. He then moved into a sales position at Mastercraft in Shipshewana, where he retired in the mid 1980s.
Nelson was a member of the American Legion Post 223 in Syracuse, the Masonic Lodge of Milford, Elks Lodge in Ligonier, and past member of the Syracuse-Wawasee Rotary Club. Nelson was an amateur magician for many years and an avid golfer. After retirement, he and his wife wintered at Sun Lakes Estates in Lake Placid, Florida. He was a WWII Navy veteran, from 1942-1945.
Survivors include his wife, 1 Daughter: Mrs Janice (Dave) Wright, of Syracuse, 1 Sister-In-Law, several nieces and nephews. He was preced in death by 2 brothers: Earl & Orville Auer.
Services will be held on Friday, March 14, 2008, at 7:00PM at Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home, Harris Chapel, with military honors by Members of the American Legion Post 223. Reverend Ken Robinson will officiate. Private burial will be at a later date in the Syracuse Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday, March 14, 4-7PM, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Syracuse Fire Department and EMS or the American Legion Post 223.
