Harriet N. Deterling

February 20, 1933 — July 15, 2008

Harriet N. Deterling, 75, of Syracuse, passed away at Goshen General Hospital on Tuesday, July 15, 2008. She was born on February 20, 1933, in Randolph County, Indiana, to Clarence C. & Miriam C. (Hinshaw) Grindle.

On May 21, 1955, she married Rolland "Ben" Deterling. He survives.

Harriet moved to Syracuse in 1991, coming from Fort Wayne. She was a retired Home Economics and Science Teacher for Montgomery County Schools, Munice Community Schools and Southwest Allen County Community Schools and served as a substitute teacher for 17 years at Wawasee Schools. Harriet was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Syracuse, where she was involved with the choir and was the director of the Handbell Choir for many years. She was a member of the NEA, the Indiana State Home Economics Association and previously traveled to Europe and across American with Varner Chance's Sounds of Hope.

Survivors include her Husband, 1 Son: Benjamin (Kimberly) Lance of Etters, PA, 2 Daughters: Lisa Carol (Philip) Hauth of Fort Wayne, Laura Lynn (Randy) Wegner of Phoenix, AR, 6 Grandchildren: Chad (Miriam) Hauth, Arica Hauth, Benjamin Roby, Trever Roby, Olivia Wegner, Chloe Deterling, 2 Step Grandchildren: Ashley Crane and Matthew Hines, 1 Great Granddaughter: Isabelle Maxine Hauth, 1 Sister: Donna (John) Williams of Albion, MI. She was preceded in death by 1 Granddaughter.

Services will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2008, at 10:00AM at the Calvary United Methodist Church, 801 South Huntington St., Syracuse, with Pastor David Herr officiating. Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8PM on Friday, July 18, 2008, at Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home, Harris Chapel in Syracuse. There will also be one hour of visitation prior to services, from 9-10AM at the church on Saturday, July 19, 2008. Graveside services will be held at 2:30PM at Elm Ridge Cemetery in Muncie, IN.

Memorial contributions may be made to Goshen Hospital Oncology Department or the Calvary United Methodist Church.
