Robert E. Lant

It is with great fondness, reverence, and admiration that we celebrate the life of Robert E. Lant. Robert passed away peacefully on the evening of Saturday, November 28, 2015, from injuries he sustained in a car accident earlier that day, just south of Plymouth, Indiana. Bob, as he was known to most, was 67 years of age. He was born in South Bend, Indiana on September 24, 1948, the third child of Margaret Louise and Elbern “Dale” Lant. He was a 1967 graduate of Riley High School in South Bend, and also attended Indiana University. On August 31, 1968, at Crest Manor Church of the Brethren, he was united in marriage to Karen Crawford. She survives, along with their two daughters, Amy (Larry) Wenger of Wakarusa and Sarah (Matt) Gilmer of Bremen. Bob and Karen also have five grandchildren, Hannah, Rebekah, and Josiah Wenger of Wakarusa, and Riley and Jackson Gilmer of Bremen. A sister, Janice (Dave) Holmes of Bremen, and a brother, Larry (Jan) Lant, of Syracuse, also survive. Bob and his family were longtime residents of Bremen, having moved to that area in 1975 when he began his career as a retail merchandiser for Philip Morris, Inc. He and Karen moved to Plymouth in 1999, and he retired from Philip Morris shortly thereafter. Bob was most recently employed by the South Bend Tribune. Bob was very much a creature of the outdoors, and was an avid fishing enthusiast and skilled golfer. He also enjoyed the practice of sport shooting. He cherished his annual treks to Canada with his brother-in-law and their mutual friends, embracing the beauty of nature and one another’s camaraderie. We will remember much about Bob, in particular his whimsy and wit, his style and sophistication, and his ability to make friends with everyone he encountered. Whether you knew Bob personally, or knew better any one of his friends, then you loved him, also, for we would not be who and what we are without having been blessed by his indescribable influence. His legacy will live on forever in his family and friends. Services for Bob will take place on Saturday, December 5 at Mishler Funeral Home, located at 2030 State Road 331 in Bremen, Indiana. There will be a two hour time of visitation from 10 a.m. until noon, with a memorial service immediately following. In accordance with the family’s wishes, Bob has been cremated, therefore, no burial service is planned. Memorial contributions in Bob’s name may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
