Carolyn Nierste

Carolyn Joann Nierste, 86, of Bremen, passed away peacefully at 3:00 pm, Sunday, October 23, 2016 in Westminster Village North of Indianapolis. Carolyn was born on August 20, 1930 in Bremen, the daughter of the late Noble and Bernice (Berkey) Haenes. On May 31, 1953, she married Frederick E. “Fritz” Nierste. He passed away on October 12, 2002. She is survived by two daughters, Janiece Gavin of Dallas, TX and Lori (David) Slaughter of Indianapolis; six grandchildren, Michael (Lisa), Sean, Kelli and Colleen Gavin, Clay (Annie) Slaughter and Emily (Seth) Wright. She is also survived by five great grandchildren, Story, Maris, Zoe, Elliott and Asher. Upon graduating from Bremen High School in 1948, Carolyn went to work in the office of Dr’s Stine, Bowen, & Burkett. She later worked as a secretary at Bremen High School, where her husband Fritz taught and coached, making it nearly impossible for her daughters to get away with anything. Carolyn then finished out her career in the law office of Mark Wagner. Carolyn spent many happy years following the Lions at various sporting events. Later she enjoyed volunteering at Bremen Community Hospital, the local Blood Bank and food pantry. Carolyn was a loyal, loving, & devoted wife, Mother, grandmother, Gigi, and friend. She will be missed but never forgotten. Visitation will be held from 11:00-1:00 pm, Monday, November 7, 2016 in Mishler Funeral Home, 2030 St. Rd. 331, Bremen. Funeral Services will follow at 1:00 pm in the funeral home with the Rev. Andrew Moore, nephew of David and Lori Slaughter, officiating. Burial will follow in Bremen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Frederick “Fritz” Nierste Scholarship Fund or to the Community Hospital of Bremen.
