Alan Earl Beer, Md

Dr. Alan Earl Beer, age 69, of Lincolnshire, Illinois, formerly of Milford, passed away on Monday, May 1, 2006 at his Los Gatos California Apartment. Dr. Beer was born April 14, 1937, in Milford, Indiana, to the late Theo & Naoma (Speheger) Beer. Dr. Alan E. Beer received his M.D. in 1962 from Indiana University School of Medicine. He did his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and his fellowship in Immunology and Genetics at the University of Pennsylvania. He was board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1971. Dr. Beer has been on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas and the University of Michigan. In 1987, Dr. Beer joined The Chicago Medical School with a joint appointment as a professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and professor of Microbiology and Immunology. He subsequently established the Reproductive Immunology Program with clinics in Illinois and California. Dr. Beer founded the Alan E. Beer Center for Reproductive Immunology & Genetics in 2003, with initial clinics in Los Gatos, California, and London, England.

Dr. Beer was an internationally known and respected physician and basic scientist. He served from 1976-1997 as editor in chief of the Journal of Reproductive Immunology. He was past chairman of the National Institutes of Health Study Section on Human Embryology and Development, and he served on other study sections involving pregnancy and human development. He was a founding member and past president of the American Society of Reproductive Immunology, and he was a senior councilor for the International Society for the Immunology of Reproduction. He was also the author of books, monographs, and numerous scientific publications.

Survivors include his wife: Dorothy of Lincolnshire, IL, 1 Son: Michael (Kathleen) Beer of Leo, IN, 3 Daughters: Betsy (Stacey) Berner of Reisterstown, MD, Margaret (Charles) Lindsey of Concord, CA, Laura (Michael) Blaivas of Evans, GA. 10 Grandchildren, 4 Sisters: Marguerite (Bob) Hoerr of New Buffalo, MI, Miriam (Lewis) Speicher of Milford, IN, Rebecca (Arnold) Doll of Milford, IN and Mary (Carl) Fiechter of Bluffton, IN. 2 Brothers: Philip (Lisa) Beer of Milford, Bernard (Peg) Beer of Nappanee. Numerous Nieces and Nephews and Great Nieces and Nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be held Monday, May 8, 2006, at 10:30AM at the Wawasee Community Bible Church, 2035 E 1300 N, Milford, IN 46542. Pastor Tom Speicher will officiate. Burial will follow at the Milford Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-6PM Sunday, May 7, 2006, at the Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home in Milford.
