Enid Lillian Miller

November 22, 1910 — June 12, 2006

Enid Lillian Miller died Monday, June 12, 2006 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. By any measure, she lived a remarkable 95 years highlighted by a lasting marriage to her high school sweetheart and the raising of a closely-knit family.

Born on November 22, 1910 to Jesse A. and Nellie (Reed) Mishler near Centreville, MI, Enid grew up in northern Indiana, the oldest of five children. After a three-year courtship, she and Gerald K. Miller were married September 1, 1929. During the Great Depression she helped support him as he continued his education and as the family gradually grew to six. In 1941, the family moved to Houston, Texas for Gerald’s work. In 1953 the family moved to Ridgefield, Connecticut where the three youngest children graduated from High School. A few years after Gerald’s untimely death in 1970, she moved to Syracuse, Indiana, next to her parents, where, as always, friends and family were warmly welcomed. For much of that time she enjoyed a wonderful companionship with a local widower, Dee Stiver. After his death she moved in with daughter, Mary, in Windham, Connecticut in 2002. Here she continued to be active in the church and the senior center. She was a regular at the senior workout class and loved to play the piano and sing for them. This year she continued these activities after moving to Dahlonega, GA.

Next to devotion to family was her love of music – especially singing and playing the piano. With an outgoing personality and an optimistic outlook, both enhanced by her search for knowledge, her friendships were far-flung, varied, and lasting.

She had four children, Beverly Jeanne of Indiana, Kirby of California, Toby of Michigan and Mary of Georgia, 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

A service for Enid will be held at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Syracuse, IN at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, 2006. Viewing will be one hour prior and one hour after the service.

The burial service will be held at the Berlin Cemetery (Holmes County, Ohio) at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 26, 2006.

Donations to the Enid Miller Memorial Fund will be given to some of her favorite charities:
Franklin Congregational Church (Franklin, Connecticut), The Organ Fund (First English Lutheran Church, Goshen IN), Paul Anderson Youth Home (Vidalia, GA), Unitarian – Universalist Church of Elkhart (Elkhart, IN).
