Charles J. Morton, 96, of Syracuse, Indiana, passed away at 10:30 am, April 4, 2022 following a long life, well lived. Charlie was born on April 7, 1925 to Orla and Bessie Morton on a farm near Lebanon Indiana. He graduated High School in 1943 and was inducted into the Army in support of WWII where he served as a member of the 164th Infantry Regiment fighting in the Central Philippines. Following his honorable discharge in late 1946 he returned to central Indiana and farming, later enrolling at Purdue University where he graduated with a degree in Agricultural Economics. In the summer of 1952 he married the love of his life, the former Isabel Baker, and they began their adventure together. Charles started his career as a County Agent for Gibson County Indiana and later joined Halderman Farm Management Services as a Field Agent and Farm Manager where he worked until his retirement in 1995. Charles and Isabel were residents of Bremen Indiana from 1956 until 2005 when they moved full time to their cottage on Lake Syracuse. Charles was an avid fisherman and storyteller and found these two hobbies extremely complimentary. He was also an accomplished problem solver, inventor, handyman and contraption builder. Charles was an active Kiwanis member in both Bremen and Syracuse Chapters. Charles and Isabel worshiped at Grace United Methodist Church in Bremen and at St. Andrews United Methodist in Syracuse. In 2017 Charles and Isabel joined the Park Place Senior Living Community in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Charles was preceded in death by his brother Milburn Morton and his parents. He is survived by his wife Isabel (Baker) Morton; son Brad Morton and his wife Susan (Secor) of San Clemente CA; son Tom Morton and his wife Carla (Sebasty) of Granger IN; daughter Beth McGough and her husband Neil of Huntertown IN. He was a loved Grandpa to Bryan (Caroline), Scott (Ashley), Kathryn, Chad (Cosette), Alexandria (Derek), Casandra (Caleb), Charla (Andy), Haley (Bobby), Mitchel (Kalena), Cara (Edward) and Audra. He was a loved Great Grandpa to Kensington, Julian, Liam, Chloe, Cody, Eddie, Rachael, Victoria, Phoenix (John) and a Great Great Grandpa to Liliana and Emilia. Visitation will be held from 11:00-1:00 pm, Monday, April 11, 2022 in Mishler Funeral Home, 2030 St Rd 331, Bremen. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 pm in the funeral home. Burial will take place in the Bremen Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to be made to the Kiwanis Children’s Fund at www.kiwanis.org/childrens-fund.
