Donald Eugene Weiss, 92, was born to Hilbert and Bernice Weiss on November 21, 1931, the seventh of eight siblings: Lester, Vera Mae, Bob, Virginia, Evelyn, Deloris, and Larry, who was born nine years after Don. He was born at home, on Indiana State Road 331, just south of Wyatt. During these years of the Depression, the family moved from farm to farm, ending up west of LaPaz. He graduated from LaPaz High School in 1949. He met his future bride, Kaye Beals, through the LaPaz Bible Club, of which her folks were sponsors. They were married on June 16, 1961, in Plymouth, IN, after both had graduated from Bob Jones University. Don's major at BJU was Practical Christian Training because his burden was to lead others into a real relationship with their Creator God! He began his ministry leading Bible Clubs in the Youth for Christ International organization, beginning with the Marshall County YFC. He followed this work with a pastoral ministry, serving churches in Walton, IN, Stephenson, MI, Annandale, VA, and Elkhart, IN. Don's parents preceded him in death, as well as all seven of his siblings. He has left behind his wife, Kaye, and their four children – Brian (Joy) Weiss, Kathryn (Eric) Woods, Shelly (Jeff) Carroll, and Pamela (Bret) Baker – who have given them ten grandchildren – Erica and Brandon Woods, Dylan and Sean Carroll, Carly and Madison Weiss, and Zachary, Drew, Seth, and Alison Baker. Brandon Woods married Larissa Mohl and gave us our first great-grandson, Allan Woods, whom the LORD took home to be with Him at birth. Don is also survived by brother-in-law Dwight Handschu, sisters-in-law Marjorie Weiss and Diana Weiss, and 14 nephews and nieces. Don was glad to "spend and be spent" for the people he ministered to. He loved flowers, and gardening was a respite for him from the cares of ministry. Farming was the "lot cast into his lap" by his father. He did not want to farm for a living, BUT any time there was a farmer in his congregation, he very readily offered to help out with the plowing and planting in the spring if they'd let him! While living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, he enjoyed working in the woods, cutting trees for extra money, which was the trade of many in our church there. A memorial service will be held in his memory on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Community Baptist Church, 5715 Miami St., South Bend, IN. There will be a gathering at 1:00 p.m. for fellowship with friends we haven't seen in a long time coming from faraway places! The service will be held at 2:00 p.m. with Community Baptist Pastor Joe Fant and Pastor Matthew Elliott of Grace Baptist Church, Plymouth, sharing the service. Anyone interested in giving gifts in Don's memory may donate to either of these two churches or to Bob Jones University for the training of future pastors.
