Evan L.
Huff
Aug 26, 1928 — Sep 5, 2026
Evan L. Huff, 98, of Bremen, died September 5, 2026 at Signature Healthcare in Bremen. He was born August 26, 1928, in the family home, the second of three sons born to Chester and Lelah (Hostetler) Huff.
On June 25, 1950, in Plymouth, Evan married Lucille Myers. Together they shared 56 years of marriage and raised four children: Susan (Rich) Amacher, Mishawaka; Bob (Reg) Huff, Bremen; Lois (Bill) Sheley, Bremen; and Jane (John Hogan) Huff, Crandon, Wisconsin. Lucille passed away on June 4, 2007.
Evan was to find happiness again when he married Anita Eckert on July 5, 2014. Along with Anita, the Huff family grew to include her son Mike (Diana) Eckert, Indianapolis; grandsons; Jake, Luke (Kelyn), and Cole; daughter Beth (Mike) Huppert, Bremen; grandson, Mitch (Allison) and granddaughter, Chelsea (Justin) Ludwig. He and Anita enjoyed many trips to Florida with her family and enjoyed lake life at her home on Lake of the Woods, Bremen.
Evan was a 1946 graduate of Bremen High School where he played trumpet, was student band director, and conducted the dance band, Starduster. He became the third generation to operate the family farm. With his son, now the fourth generation, they produced pork for over 50 years, and together raised corn, soybeans and wheat. In 2020, the Indiana State Department of Agriculture presented the Huff family farm with a Hoosier Homestead Farm Centennial Award (1893 - 1993). While yet in his 90’s, Evan helped with the harvest alongside his son and grandsons.
He was quick to help a neighbor or passersby in distress, whether it be driving a neighbor to the hospital or starting up the tractor to pull a car out of a snowbank or ditch. He spent hours tending to a large garden. There was always an abundance of green beans, tomatoes, sweetcorn, green onions, zucchini, cucumbers, cantaloupe and watermelon which he gladly shared.
Evan was an active member of the Farm Bureau and served two terms on the Bremen School Board. He was a life-long member of Grace United Methodist Church (now Bremen United Methodist) where he served many years as a Sunday School teacher and choir director. God gifted him with a beautiful tenor voice. He sang for many funerals, church solos, and weddings, including at the age of 92, singing at grandson Troy's wedding. For many years it was tradition he would sing “O Holy Night” at the Christmas Eve service. He worked behind the scenes at the Bremen Holy Walk by helping keep the hundreds of Coleman lanterns burning brightly.
Evan enjoyed fishing and mushroom hunting. He made the best homemade ice cream this side of heaven. For many years he entertained the family with amazing displays of July Fourth fireworks. Each summer the family spent a week vacationing at Risser's Pine Shore Resort on Lake Metonga, Crandon, Wisconsin. In 1990 Evan and Lucille purchased one of those resort cabins where more memories will be made for generations to come.
He shared a smile or friendly nod to everyone he met and was genuinely interested in others. He also had a sense of humor. While at Signature Healthcare, when informed there were field trips, he exclaimed, "Field Trips?! I worked in fields all my life! Why would I want to go on a field trip?!"
Evan is survived by his wife, Anita, children Susan, Bob, Lois and Jane; grandchildren Heidi (Ryan) Sturm, Greg (Courtney) Amacher, Laura (Ned) Rudd, Amy (Alan) Garretson, Todd (Jenn) Huff, Chad (Meghan) Huff, Troy (Michelle) Huff, Jessica (Ron) Kruger, and Anneleis Linderud; and great grandchildren: Brody, Coby, and Tate Sturm; Anna Kate and Drew Amacher; Blake, Camri, Alexis, Landon, Gavin and Clay Garretson, Asher Rudd, Henry Huff, Myla and Lacy Huff, and Julia Huff.
He was predeceased by his parents Chester and Lelah Huff, wife Lucille, and brothers Ward and Alan Huff.
Evan saw many changes over his life span of nearly a century. His life was a timeless example of hard work, willingness to lend a helping hand, steadfast faith in the Lord, quick witted humor, and a man of upstanding character and values.
