Harley Stieglitz

Harley Joshua Stieglitz, 91, of South Bend, Indiana passed away in his home on December 28 surrounded by his loving wife and his entire immediate family. He was born and raised on a farm in Milford, Indiana, the third of ten children. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth of 66 years. Also surviving are daughters Deborah Meeks, Kari (Dan) Black and son Jeff. Surviving grandchildren are Brian (Cora) Meeks, Andrew Meeks, Gabriel Black, Christopher Black, Mariel Black, Amanda (Kyle) Edington, Tanner Stieglitz and Kelli Stieglitz. Great grandchildren are Colin, Conner and Lucy Edington and Rowen Meeks. Surviving siblings are James Stieglitz, Elizabeth Scruggs, Frances Schiller and Ruth Hooley. Harley was preceded in death by his parents Anna and Henry Stieglitz and by his siblings George, Larry, John, William and Rosemary (Zook). Harley was a veteran of the Army in WWII where he played on the Army traveling basketball team for his division. He was a sales executive in the insurance industry retiring from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Indiana after 29 years. He was a long-time member of the Methodist Church, a Life Member of the American Legion and a Life Member of the Fraternal Order of Elks. Harley excelled at sports including basketball, boxing and softball where he pitched for many South Bend/Mishawaka championship teams. He was an avid fan of The Fighting Irish, The IU Hoosiers, and The White Socks. He loved to bowl, play billiards and could really throw a Frisbee. He was a master gardener specializing in roses. He loved nature and animals and created a bird sanctuary in his back yard with a heated bird bath. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren, accompanying them on many trips to the lake, zoos and parks where he taught them to throw a Frisbee and skip stones. Funeral services were private for family. Arrangements handled by Mishler Funeral Home. Memorial Contributions may be made to the donor's choice.
