Obituary

John Dale Smith, 95, of Bremen, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2026, in Community Hospital of Bremen. He was born to Theodore and Dorothy (Wagley) Smith on June 3, 1930, in Bremen. On September 6, 1953, John married Shirley Schweisberger. They built a life together for 61 years. She passed away on December 20, 2014. He later married Loretta Huff. She passed away on January 7, 2026.

John graduated from Madison High School with the class of 1948. John was a dairy farmer until he turned 48 and then continued to grain farm until the age of 60. He enjoyed being a part of a judging team, bowling league, euchre club, bingo and groundhog hunting, which he won various competitions.

John is survived by three children: Susan Smith of Nappanee, Barbara (Dan) Metzler of Nappanee and Devon (Kay) Smith of Bremen; seven grandchildren: Kristy Anderson, Jennifer (Trent) Miller, Jaclyn (Scott) Blackford, Josh (Laura) Metzler, Jalayne (Jared) Coblentz, Haley (Jess) Metzler and Staci (James) Hoover; and 16 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a half-sister: Ann Gilbert and sister-in-law: June Smith.

Visitation will be held from 10:00-12:00 pm, Monday, April 27, 2026, in Mishler Funeral Home, Bremen. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 pm, in the funeral home. Burial will take place in Bremen Cemetery. Pastor Chuck Krieg will officiate.

The family would like to send out a special thank you to his compassionate and caring nurse, Geri.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like memorial contributions to be made to Community Hospital of Bremen, 1020 High Rd. Bremen, IN 46506.
