Maxine Harter

February 1, 1926 — August 26, 2017

Maxine Lillian Harter, 91, of North Liberty, passed away at 7:00 pm, Saturday, August 26, 2017 in her home. She was born to Willard and Mable (Smeltzer) Sauer on February 1, 1926. Maxine attended Lakeville High School. She married Kenneth Harter on September 7, 1946. Kenneth was stationed at San Bernardino Army Air Field in California. Maxine had never been away from home but did take a train by herself from Chicago to California. The couple returned to Indiana after Kenneth’s discharge on April 1, 1947. Born to them were daughters Jeanette and Irene and son Dean. Maxine worked several jobs, but was most proud of her work at Woolworth stores in Mishawaka and South Bend. When these stores closed, she went to work at Woodies Supermarket in Bremen and worked there until she retired at age 80. Her loving husband Kenneth, daughter, Irene Grover and grandson, Tony Harter have preceded her in death, as have her parents, brothers, Vernon and Floyd Sauer, and sisters, Alice Platz,, Velma Merrill, Catherine Merrill, Mary Gerhart, Lois Miller, Alma Jean Battles, Carolyn Sanders and Fay Hunsberger. Maxine was a wonderful mom, wife, grandma and great grandma. She love to plant flowers in her front yard and planted a garden every year. Regardless of her age she was always moving the furniture in her living room and also had a supply of chocolate candy for all occasions. She attended church every Sunday and was a devoted member of County Line Brethren Church in Lakeville. Those left to cherish her memory and will miss her greatly are: Daughter and son-in-law; Jeanette Harter Layton and Jon Layton from Indianapolis, son and daughter-in-law; Dean and Becky Harter from North Liberty, IN and son-in-law, Bob Grover from Goshen; grandchildren; Stephanie Layton, Kendall and Eric Kendall from Carmel, IN, Christopher Layton From Noblesville, IN, Andrea Harter Peterson and Jim Peterson from North Liberty, IN, Adam Harter from Lakeville, Brad Grover from Cassopolis, MI and Ken and Beatrice Grover from Goshen,; great grandchildren, Megan and Andrew Peterson from North Liberty, IN, Austin, Audri and Charity Harter from Plymouth, IN, Kayla and Kollin Grover from Cassopolis, MI, Alex Grover from Goshen IN, Maxwell and Lily Kendall from Carmel, IN, Brittany Gerger from Goshen, IN and great great grandson, Issac Gerger from Goshen, IN. Also surviving are brothers, Dale and Bob Sauer from Lakeville, IN, and sisters, Arlene Jacobs, Elkhart, IN, Joyce Gaines from Lakeville, IN and Jane Sauer from Texas. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 pm, Thursday, August 31, 2017 in Mishler Funeral Home, 2030 St Rd 331, Bremen. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, September 1, 2017 in County Line Brethren Church, 69988 US Hwy 31, Lakeville, IN 46536. Pastor Wyatt Smith will officiate. Burial will follow in Bremen Cemetery. Maxine loved children, so the family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to Riley Children’s Foundation, 30 S. Meridian St. Suite 200 Indianapolis, Indiana 46204-3509.
