Mel Sheley

Delyle Melvere “Mel” Sheley, 84, of Bremen, passed away at 1:23 pm, Saturday, November 25, 2017 in Miller’s Merry Manor of Wakarusa.  Mel was born on December 27, 1932, the son of Albert and Leila (Rice) Sheley.  On July 30, 1952, he married Carolyn Caskey. Mel is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Carolyn, four children; Jon Sheley of Plano, IL, Suzanne (Dale) Leiter of Plymouth, Sheila (Todd) Stuckman of Bremen and William (Lois) Sheley of Bremen; eight grandchildren, Jeremy, Jason, April, Kati, Michael, Kyle, Justin, and T.J.; and 16 great grandchildren.  He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Delbert and DeWayne and two brothers in law, Larry Riley and Ronald Caskey. He went to work for B & O Railroad, retiring after 42 years.  He was an active member of the Bremen Methodist Church as many leaders.  He cooked pancakes for C.R.O.P. and went on mission trips, including one trip to Ecuador.  He was a “jack of all trades” for his church, family and friends.  He enjoyed and donated much to the Bremen Historical Society and was instrumental in getting the depot moved and finished.  Mel was a good husband, dad, and grandpa. He was usually teaching and playing with the grandchildren and it usually had something to do with trains.  He took them on many trips and train rides.  His favorite food was a rare steak and butterscotch pie, but don’t dare serve him potato soup! Instead give him chocolate, bologna or cheese. Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 pm, Wednesday, November 29, 2017 in Mishler Funeral Home, 2030 St. Rd. 331, Bremen.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, November 30, 2017 in Bremen United Methodist Church, 320 Plymouth St., Bremen, with one hour of visitation prior.  Rev. Lynn Breeden will officiate.  Burial will follow in Bremen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions to be made to the Bremen Historical Society or to the Bremen United Methodist Church.
