Norman Elwood McGowen, 98, of Bremen, passed away of natural causes, Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at the Hospice House of Elkhart surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 10, 1919, in LaPorte County, the fourth of five children to Charles and Hilda (Thompson) McGowen. Norman married Dorothy Myhre on January 9, 1943 and they were happily married for 66 years. He is survived by his two sons, Mike (Connie) McGowen of Wakarusa and David (Kathy) McGowen of Bremen; four grandchildren, Dr. Jeff (Amy) McGowen of Fort Worth, Texas, Kristi (Brian) Hoffbauer of Batesville, IN, Katie (Nate) Mueller of Winona Lake and Zac (Cho) McGowen of Bremen; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert (Arvilla) McGowen of Santa Clause, IN. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy and infant daughter, Sherry Sue; siblings Arnold McGowen, Verna Heckaman and Violet Jones. A World-War II vet, Norman fought in Europe from 1944 through 1945 earning a Silver Star and Purple Heart. After the war, he worked as a rural mail carrier for 29 years and was a volunteer fireman for 23 years. He took an active role in First Baptist Church in Bremen serving as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He actively served the Lord well into his 90s. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, Monday, March 12, 2018 at the First Baptist Church, 414 E. Lincoln St., Bremen followed by the funeral at 3:00 pm. Burial will take place at the Bremen Cemetery following the funeral with full military rites. Memorial contributions can be made to First Baptist Church in Bremen or to The Gideon’s International.
