Robert Schmidt

March 28, 1925 — May 19, 2018

Robert "Bob" Allen Schmidt, of Nappanee, formerly of East Hampton, Connecticut, went to be with his heavenly father at 8:50 pm, Saturday, May 19, 2018 in Miller’s Merry Manor of Wakarusa. He was born to Herman and Eva Schmidt in Hartford, Connecticut on March 28, 1925. On February 20, 1954, he married Mildred Kapchensky. Bob was preceded in death by his wife Mildred in 2011. He is survived in death by his son Bruce (Deb) Schmidt, daughter Mary Beth Schmidt;six grandchildren – Jasmine (David) Ferguson, Claire Schmidt, Lila Dethlefsen, Riley (Hannah) Schmidt, Josef Dethlefsen, and Benjamin Dethlefsen; great-grandchild Jack Ferguson, and one brother Norman (Ruth) Schmidt. Bob graduated from Weaver High School in Hartford, CT and graduated in 1943. He served in World War II in the 99th Infantry Division in Europe from 1943-1946. He attended and graduated from Bates College after his military service. Bob worked in the Engineering Division at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for 35 years, retiring as manager of Programming in the Data Processing organization. Bob was an avid fan of all sports, particularly baseball and basketball. He participated in organized baseball, basketball, softball and bowling from his youth to his adult years. Summer vacations from college included playing softball three nights a week despite working as a mail carrier in East Hartford. He was a huge fan of UCONN women's basketball despite living out his later years in the shadow of Notre Dame fandom in Nappanee, Indiana. Bob was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church. He served as an Elder, on church boards, as Sunday School Superintendent, and taught Sunday School and bible classes. He also counseled youth groups and sang in choirs in the many different churches he was involved with. He was also an active member of the Walther League recanting many positive memories of both his participation and leadership. Bob will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and shining example of a Christian role model. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 pm, Friday, May 25, 2018 in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 605 S. Center St., Bremen. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, May 26, 2018 in the church with one hour of visitation prior. Burial will follow in Bremen Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the church.
