Steve E. Tener, 68, of Bourbon, Indiana, passed away after a short battle with a very rare autoimmune disease, Neuromyelitis Optica, on September 4, 2026, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka, Indiana. He was born on September 8, 1957, in Bremen, Indiana, to Lowell and Lueverta Tener.

On October 20, 1984, Steve married the love of his life, Sonya “Sam” Quier, in Warsaw, Indiana. Together, they built a life filled with love, family, laughter, and countless memories. Steve was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

Steve is survived by his wife, Sonya “Sam”; his daughter, Cassie (Joshua) Kuhn of Mentone; his son, Joshua Tener (fiancé Jessica Clyde) of Claypool; and his nine grandchildren, who brought him great joy. He is also survived by his siblings, Gary (Nancy) Tener of Etna Green, Cindy Smith of Argos, Randy Tener of Bremen, and Ryan (Virginia) Tener of Nappanee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lowell and Lueverta Tener.

Steve worked approximately 14 years at the family-owned Tener Bake Shop. He also worked several years at Hoskins in New Paris. The last 31 years were spent at Universal Bearings in Bremen where he finally retired on August 31, 2026.

He took pride in his work and was known for his strong work ethic. When he wasn’t working, Steve could often be found splitting wood for his wood burner or heading out to enjoy one of the many cars shows he loved attending.

More than anything, Steve was known for his generous heart. He was the kind of person who would drop everything to help someone, whether they were near or far. He would give anything he had to someone in need and never hesitated to lend a hand. His kindness touched the lives of countless people, and his willingness to help others was one of the many things that made him so special.

Steve’s generosity continued even after his passing. In keeping with the selfless way he lived his life, he donated his organs so that others could be helped and given a chance at life. His final gift reflects the same compassion and generosity he showed throughout his life.

Steve will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to know him. His memory will live on through the people he helped, the lives he touched, and the love he gave so freely.

A visitation will be held from 12:00-3:30 pm, Friday, September 11, 2026 at the Church of the Brethren in Bremen. A memorial service will follow at 3:30 pm in the church. Following the service, family and friends are invited to gather for a bonfire at Steve’s home, 2520 7th Road, Bourbon, Indiana, to share memories, stories, and fellowship in his honor.
