Ted Huber, longtime football coach, mentor, and leader in Indiana athletics, passed away on January 20, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by excellence, integrity and a lifelong commitment to young people and the game of football.
Huber devoted his professional life to coaching, impacting thousands of athletes during his coaching career. He coached at Greenburg, Hamilton Heights, Norwell, Bloomington South and Warsaw High Schools and had college coaching stops at Indiana University, Northern Illinois University and Ball State University.
Ted was a standout athlete, earning 12 varsity letters during his career at Bremen High School in Northern Indiana. He was a three-year letter winner in both baseball and football, earning team MVP and All Conference honors in both sports.
He graduated from Ball State University in 1967 and later earned his master’s degree in 1972. While at Ball State, Ted continued to excel athletically, earning six letters, three in baseball and three in football being named Team Captain and All-Conference in both sports.
Ted coached in the first Indiana high school football playoffs in 1973, served as a South All-Star assistant coach in 1974 and later as a North All-Star assistant coach in 1991. He was named to his High School Hall of Fame (Bremen), his College Hall of Fame (Ball State), the Indiana Football Hall of Fame and the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Off the field, he was deeply respected within the coaching community. He was an active member of the Indiana Football Coaches Association for over 50 years, serving as both President and Executive Secretary. He was named Ball State University Alumnus Coach of the Year in 1971 and authored the book History of the Indiana Football Coaches Association, preserving the legacy of the profession he loved so much.
Above all, Ted was a devoted husband, father, brother and grandpa. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Maureen; daughter, Kelly; son, Dan; and four grandchildren: Zachary, Austin, Noah & Owen. He is also survived by sisters Kathy Heller, Susie Gooch and brother Marty Huber and preceded in death by his parents Kenny and Bethel Huber. His family was the foundation of his life and the source of his greatest pride.
Ted Huber will be remembered not only for his wins and accolades, but for the character he instilled in his players, the standards he set as a leader, and the countless lives he shaped through sport and mentorship.
Visitation will be held from 2:00-4:00 pm, Sunday, February 1, 2026 in Mishler Funeral Home, Bremen. Funeral services will begin at 4:00 pm Sunday in the funeral home with Rev. Daniel Niezer officiating. Private burial will take place in Bremen Cemetery.
